Federal Way operates under the Council/Manager form of government. The City Council consists of seven members who are directly elected by the citizens to four-year terms. The City Council establishes law and policy by adopting ordinances and resolutions and appoints the City Manager. Other duties include approving the city budget, authorizing appropriations, approving contracts, levying taxes, and granting franchises.
The Mayor is elected by the Council from among its members for a two-year term and presides at City Council meetings. Several commissions, made up of citizen volunteers, advise the City Council. The City Manager is the city’s Chief Executive Officer and manages day-to-day operations.
