In 1997 the city received an American Public Works Association "Project of the Year" award for its Kitts Corner Regional Storm Water Detention facility. Engineers, from around the United States and world, travel to Federal Way to study the city’s successes in nearly eliminating the threat of flooding. In the midst of urban development, Hylebos State Park — a native wetland area — has been preserved for public education, contemplation, and enjoyment.
