As a young and expanding urban center, Federal Way is among the region’s cities receiving first priority for enhanced regional transportation improvements. In 1996, the voters approved the creation of the regional transit authority agency, Sound Transit. The backbone of Sound Transit’s transportation improvement plan is to connect the major urban centers of Bellevue, Everett, Tacoma, and Seattle with other communities in Central Puget Sound. It will incorporate regional and local bus service as well as light rail.
Thanks to the proximity of SeaTac International Airport and transportation hubs such as the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma, it’s easy to keep ahead of the competition.
Federal Way is served by Metro, King County’s bus system, and has three major and several satellite Park and Ride lots, as well as arterial stops. Metro provides 24-hour local and express service to destinations throughout the region.
A new Federal Way facility, including a new parking structure and transit center, was completed in February 2006. It provides service to Tacoma, Bellevue, Seattle, and surrounding communities in keeping with goals of the City of Federal Way and the Chamber’s partnership for economic development. The project is mixed-use, including housing, retail, and office development. Federal Way’s convenient public transportation system provides connections to cities throughout the Puget Sound region.
